APT9/ Artist Stories: Qiu Zhijie ‘Map of Technological Ethics’

DELVE DEEPER into APT9 https://blog.qagoma.qld.gov.au/category/qagoma/asia-pacific-triennial/ SUBSCRIBE to be the first to go behind-the-scenes/ Qiu Zhijie discusses his art practice while in Brisbane to create ‘Map of Technological Ethics’ 2018 especially conceived for GOMA’s expansive spaces during ‘The 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’ (APT9) from 24 November 2018 until 28 April 2019. Free, and curated for audiences of all ages, APT9 will be presented across key spaces in the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and the entire Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA).

Exclusive to QAGOMA, the latest chapter in the Gallery’s flagship exhibition series will include new and recent work by more than 80 emerging and established artists and collectives from more than 30 countries. APT presents a wonderful opportunity for visual artists from across Australia and the Asia Pacific to collaborate and share works that are a powerful expression of their cultures and experiences.

With its origins in calligraphy, Qiu Zhijie’s practice has evolved through a range of media, idioms and cultural frameworks to arrive at a notion of ‘total art’. His artworks maintain a rich dialogue between Chinese pictorial and literary traditions, contemporary art, philosophy and social engagement.

Qiu Zhijie’s work is expansive and absorbing, and the substantial scale and narrative richness of his creations is evident in his vast maps, which blend cartographic techniques from multiple disciplines, including geography, history, philosophy, mythology and science.
